It was 7:00pm on a Saturday evening when I reached BTM layout and was waiting for a Volvo bus. It was just 7:00pm and I don’t know where in the hell were all the Volvo buses that evening. I waited for over 25mins for a Volvo to turn up, but it didn’t. I was forced to board a normal bus which was crowded like hell with drunken stinking losers hanging inside. Most of the public buses in Bangalore have hydraulic doors. The hydraulic system is so horrible that the speed at which the doors closes is like smashing a door in anger! Scary!
With the fear of those hydraulic doors, I rushed inside the bus. There were 4 guys who were blocking my way from going inside the bus. I requested one guy to give me some way, but he refused. I tried pushing him, but he didn’t move! I was like, “F it!” and stood there itself. I then realized that I was expecting an SMS and I reached my hands into my pocket to take my phone and found out that it was missing. I searched all over and I looked at the guy standing next to me and he was in a hurry to get the hell out of the frikkin bus. All the 4 of `em were rushing out of the bus when one man asked:
Man: What happened? Is something missing?
Me: Yeah! My phone is missing!!!
Man: I think the man who stood next to you took it.
Me: Agrrr!!! You telling me this now after he got down?

I went mad and jumped out of the bus and ran back to the place where they got down. I caught the guy who stood next to me in the bus and checked his pockets, but he was clean. I think he had already passed the phone to someone amongst the other 3, but those 3 were missing. People at the bus stop were curious to know why I was checking him.
He deviated my mind saying:
Thief: Look there! He’s boarding the bus. Catch hold of him. He has it.
Me (Holding his hand tight): WTF? How do you know it’s him?
Theif: It is him! You check him!
Me: Okay come with me.
I literally shouted the man boarding the bus to get out and he innocently got down and this guy (the thief) starts to escape. He tries to board the moving bus and I try to pull him off the bus. His slippers fall off and hops on the bus with bare foot. I followed the bus till the next stop and couldn’t find him. When enquired with the people inside the bus they said, he got down mid-way. I was so frustrated and walked back to the previous stop thinking if I could find him somewhere. While I walked back, a man who saw me holding his hands at the bus stop came to me and said, that guy just came back, took his slippers and ran away from there. I lost all hopes of getting back my phone and the next thing that came into my mind was to block my sim. It was 8:15pm and I was sure that the Airtel office would have been closed by that time. I felt so helpless. I shouldn’t have had fallen for the trick he played
After a night and a day without a phone, I feel so lifeless.
Dude!! I know the feeling. I will feel like someone died if I lost my phone
Hey…. that was indeed a bad experience. I too had similar experience when my wallet got robbed in a similar fashion. Nevertheless, I did not bother to chase the unknown. That’s a different story.
One more thing Joel, please dont get me wrong…. when you narrarte a scenario, articulate the matter in a same tense. For example, in the para when you stated….”I literally shouted the man boarding the bus to get out and he innocently got down and this guy (the thief) starts to escape. He tries to board the moving bus and I try to pull him off the bus. His slippers fall off and hops on the bus with bare foot.” …. you started off with past tense, then you continued the topic with present tense. Suggest you to keep your tenses consistent for effortless reading.. otherwise, it is a good piece of writing!!!

Awww too bad. But I think one doesnt need to go to office to block sim. U just have to call customer care. I had once lost my mobile and did the same.
Holy crap dude! I’m sorry to hear about this. Sounds like you had a horrifying experience.
And I know you were upset about losing the phone and everything, but going behind a gang of three, and confronting them alone is pretty foolish. I dunno where you got the courage from though. Bravo buddy!
wrote a blog here (http://tarunksblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/mobile-theft-in-bmtc-buses.html) about my pain and realized that I am not alone.
Looks like I should just stop using non volvo buses.
same thing here today… Not only did i get pickpocketed two other chaps got pickpocketed of their mobiles as well. I am checking through various blogs, this is starting to b much of a problem in bangalore, and these people are turning out to be professional. And it wasn’t just two or three there were at least 12 people who boarded the bus in a frenzy. and all of them exited the bus in a similar fashion. i am sure more than three of us lost our mobiles today. BTW this happened between Kormangala and Egipura.
Hei… Today it was around my turn of loosing my LG cookie mobile phone, but luckily could escape when I felt some one trying to remove it..
This happened when I’m travelling from jaya nagar 9th block to banshankari. The guy standing next to me was holding a big jacket in his hand, covering my pocket and his hand, he slowly started pushing my mobile upwards from jeans pocket, when I realized something moving from my pocket. Mobile was almost half outside when I checked it, and that fellow in turn started shouting that I’m standing in the way and he wants to get down.. I was in shock and by the time I realized they got down. There were 3 people and they immediately crossed the road and took the bus moving on opposite direction… I think it’s better to be careful and watch for the people standing beside us.. Especially if they are trying to forcibly cover our pockets with some things….
well, its still very fresh, about some 5 hrs back I wud say, was waiting for a volvo in the KBS and there were none for 20 straight mins, can u believe it? I touched my wallet at the rear pocket of my jeans and assured myself it is still there. Just when I was contemplating on putting it in my front pocket, noticed a bus of my direction just arriving..rushed at it, fought my way in to get a much needed seat and found the only empty seat was being reserved by the guy seating next to it with his damn bag..told him to move the bag, but he bluntly refused..I said f**k it in frustration and just touched my rear pocket as a habit and there! my wallet was gone by then..how guilty can u feel when u were just thinking of saving it minutes back and then couldn’t do that! I feel awful! I mean money comes and goes, thats fine, but loosing it like that..well I never felt more stupid in my life I bet!
and these days, any expensive items in your pocket when u r boarding a f’ing BMTC bus is a liability..thats why I turned to private vehicle yrs back..couldn’t beat it though!
After reading the above posts, I now remember how I lost my Nokia 2690 today. I’m guessing that as soon as the bus 342 arrived at the Koramangala Water Tank bus stop many people surrounded me and started to push me to get inside the bus. It was a Pushpak bus ie front entry and one guy just stood near the door and blocked me from entering while others from behind started to push me from behind. In that complication somebody might have lifted my 1 month old mobile from my front left pocket. My wallet which was on front right pocket was safe. The guy who was standing in front of me did not board the bus and came outside the bus, hence this thought.
Guess there is a gang operating in this area & my friend has also lost his mobile near Domlur. In his case the police refused to take complaint & asked him to get the original bill of purchase of mobile.
In my case I needed to block my BSNL SIM. Even for blocking my SIM, BSNL asked for a police “Lost SIM” complaint (not FIR). Finally I took a duplicate SIM after giving a copy of police complaint.
What is a possible solution to mobile thefts ?
I too list my mobile in the same way, some three or four people crowded me n started pushing me from all around, after few minutes everything was clear, i dont know wat happnd, i checked my front pocket for my Nokia 5530 n it was gone…… It was dear to me n i really wish if i cud get my hands on that guy, wanna beat shit out of him…..
I am a recent victim of this, and after reading these comments, I feel I should have read them earlier and avoided the frickin BMTC bus. The modus operandi was the same in my case too. One person was unnecessarily blocking me from getting into the bus, while others were pushing me from all sides. When I checked my pocket 30 seconds later, my iPhone was gone!!
I guess any such unnecessary blocking/pushing should be seen as a sure shot sign of pick pocketing activity, and the guy who is blocking/pushing unnecessarily should be thrashed then and there. Only then these buggers will learn a lesson.
The police is also involved in this I feel, because in most cases they refuse to take down a complaint, and act as if this is normal.
Even i lost ma mobile….on 22nd May..Saturday night 9.35PM…BTM(Mico layout) Bus Stop…Bus No:201 going to Domlur..Normal bus..what Joel said..Same way they thefted ma mobile….Its just 5 second difference…I just shouted.. One guy told…some 2 guys got down the bus…I searched…no body was there..
Later i thought…..it was he.its him oly(90%),who told some 2 guys….balaa..blaa..
Its became a common issue in bangalore…201 Bus No..is in hit list of thefts….
Some thing…some solution need to be made..for these things..
Should stop crowding the bus…
Regular volvo buses to any place at any time…
Rikshaws should move on their metre price..not on their own …
