Why not WordPress?
Posted by Joel | Filed under Questions, blogging, wordpress
I see that most of my readers and blogs that I follow use Blogger as their blogging platform. WordPress is great, user friendly, more efficient and yet you choose Blogger. This makes me wonder what is so good about Blogger than to WordPress and always there’s one question running in my mind and that is, why do you prefer Blogger but not WordPress? Well, you might ask the same question back to me… Why I prefer WordPress?
Ok, here’s why I prefer it. I have made a small chart which shows the comparison between WordPress and Blogspot.
You can see the number of red marks in Blogger column when compared to WordPress. Well this is not the end of the comparison. There are more and you can find them here.
Ok, I have edited the post by adding this particular chart, which gives the comparison between Blogger, Typepad, BlogWare, WordPress and Expression Engine.
Blogspot users, now its your turn to tell why you prefer Blogger. Well, I am opening a poll on this topic and please vote of your choice.
[poll id="2"]
Chart credits: Tablefy and user Bingo.

Well he’s missed the most important subject of comparison any blogger would have in mind — money. WordPress sucks big time in supporting Adsense or any other network, whereas Blogger has it so clearly laid out that any newbie can lay down the ads.

well ,ofcourse wordpress rocks unless the blogger has money making in mind..
@ santosh
there is lot more in blogging than just earning money..
how many bloggers earn money through blogging …i guess a very few percentage ..

Many disadvantages of Wordpress:
1. Annoying snap review.
2. You can edit the template if you have a paid version only.
3. Posting comments need E-mail address. Anyone who knows your email id can post it without your knowledge, too. CAPTCHA is far better!
4. With a single gmail id, you can login to google services like orkut, blogger, mail etc
5. Placing ads and other links on blogger is easy. You can earn money through blogging. Whereas wordpress doesn’t support it if you’re a free user.
FYI, blogger has also introduced scheduling posts.
Hence blogger is the best

Missed out few more points in the earlier comment.
6. Blogger does save the images uploaded on blogspot to picasaweb gallery.
7. Uploading pics using Picasa is easier.
8. Labels are provided to tag against the posts.
9. Using docs.google.com, you can save and publish later.
10. Last, but not the least, if you’re good at html and xml, you can design your own template
Now, you should switch to blogspot
June 25th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
11. Browsing thru the archives is easier in blogspot. You can view the title too. Again, its sick in wordpress
June 25th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
@Santosh: Do you blog just for money? Well, I didn’t know that thing about you…! I also agree that WP doesn’t support Adsense as Blogger does. But, blogging isn’t just making money. I hope you agree with that.
And BTW, you gave your comment on my blog after a long time. So, welcome again and thanks for dropping by…
@Arvind: That’s true. But bloggers do earn money too. Some of the are very desperate, that they just keep injecting ads where ever they find place. I can give an example, but I would not like to mention it here…
@Meg: “Loyal Readers” That was the word I was looking for. That’s a great comment Meghana…

And ya, WordPress rocks…
Hehee..good I reminded you about your exams and which makes me get another answer, why your blog wasn’t updated….
Anyways all the best…

Wordpress is (and most likely will be for a while) the most used blogging platform world wide .. so I think that says it all.
June 25th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
@Manasa: Yeah, this ones a special comment for you. Looks like you have done a research on wordpress and blogger. 11 points huh? I’ll justify em…
1. Annoying snap review.
Well you always have an option to disable it…
2. You can edit the template if you have a paid version only.
Why edit? Wanna remove the footer link..?
3. Posting comments need E-mail address. Anyone who knows your email id can post it without your knowledge, too. CAPTCHA is far better!
You have any suggestions on how to make it more safer? Send your ideas here.
No one can help with that…
4. With a single gmail id, you can login to google services like orkut, blogger, mail etc
Hmmm…That’s coz they all come under Google services. But you can do something similar like that with WP too. Create an account on WP and it gives access to all WP blogs, which also makes you solve your previous issue. No need of typing out your name, e-mail or URL…
5. Placing ads and other links on blogger is easy. You can earn money through blogging. Whereas wordpress doesn’t support it if you’re a free user.
Ok, I agree on that. There’s nothing can be done with that…
June 25th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
6. Blogger does save the images uploaded on blogspot to picasaweb gallery.
So does WP. It has its own inbuilt gallery…
7. Uploading pics using Picasa is easier.
Flickr is also better…
8. Labels are provided to tag against the posts.

9. Using docs.google.com, you can save and publish later.
In WP you can draft your posts too…
10. Last, but not the least, if you’re good at html and xml, you can design your own template.
That doesn’t include here…
11. Browsing thru the archives is easier in blogspot. You can view the title too. Again, its sick in wordpress.
Hmmm. I have no clue about this… Can anyone justify?
Phew!
that was tiring..!
June 25th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
@Kate: Not for a while, will continue to be the most used blogging platform in the world…
BTW thanks for dropping by…
June 25th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
The only reason I moved to Wordpress was I got bored and wanted something new. But in Blogger’s defence: 1) Google 2) Edit CSS (this is only available on the paid version of WP).
BTW, I think RSS and Search can be added to Blogger by editing the CSS.
June 25th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Blogger= most of them they create a blog for money. Wordpress.com= They just want to write and write again
June 25th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I have always went with a self-hosted solution. It took me a while to come around to Wordpress. I used to run Movable Type. But now it’s all I use for blogs and Drupal is all I use for anything else.

Why do i have to fill a form even when I’m a WP user now?
Anyway so Blogger does have scheduling of posts and labels instead of categories.Didnt get the admin panel thing??? Blogger has more layout options than Wordpress. If I select a WP theme i cant change the color scheme and that sucks! I loved my colorful blogger blog.Sigh! There is no video uploading in WP directly from one’s computer, right? Archives in WP comes month wise where as in blogger one can see the title under the month posted. so if any title appeals a reader can read it. There is search option in Blogger too.
P.S. table n all is v cool.
June 26th, 2008 at 6:06 am
Wordpress rocks!!!
dot even compare it with blogger ..dat sucks , the no of bloggers shifting to wordpress is increasing everyday
June 26th, 2008 at 6:40 am
@Priya: But still WordPress rocks!!!..
@caTcode: That’s true too…
@Stephan: Same thing here too. Always been with self-hosted blogs. Recently created joelifernandes.wordpress.com to see how it is actually in there…
(Seems to be good though)
@Reema: That’s because this is a self-hosted blog. I don’t know whether there’s any solution for that. If there is, I will definitely implement it here…

The top dark blue bar which you see is the admin panel. And ya the one disadvantage with WP is you cant edit the CSS..
Also, you can embed our videos from YouTube though instead on uploading them to WP…
@Rekha: Yeah, Bloggers migrating to WP is increasing rapidly…
June 26th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Few Errors in you Table:
1.Catagories: Called labels or tags
2.RSS: Available on Blogger (http://xxx.blogspot.com/feeds/posts or comments/Default)
3. Search available on all blogs
4. Post scheduling is available
5. Edit Templates offline (Through XML) but you dont get WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get)
And to why I went for Blogger than Wordpress? Two reasons!
First and most important: I did’nt know about WP (I was on Live Spaces all this while)
Second Reason: One ID (Google) for all!
Third Reason: No paid option available. Usually on sites where they offer no charge and paid options, the no charge one would be a very basic version with all the you-want-to-have features on the paid side!
Whatever site you are on, keep bloggin!

BTW there is a great blogging tool, Live Writer! and its free, check it out at http://get.live.com

I guess that most bloggers do not follow SEO techniques…most of them do not even know what SEO is all about…Once you get a grip on SEO, monetizing blogging should not be that difficult
June 26th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
i vote blogger! old habits die hard i guess
June 27th, 2008 at 10:07 am
@Nikhil: Ya, I know the table is quite old…
And also, that’s a great blogging tool. But I don’t use that. I use either, BlogJet or ScribeFire. Most of the time its ScribeFire…
@Zafar Ahmed: Hey there.. Welcome and thanks for your comment..

Ya, I agree that most of the blogger do not follow SEO techniques… They just concentrate on blogging and nothing else…
@Lemonade: Woo… Hi there.. I’m happy that you gave a visit to ma blog..
Thanks for dropping by…
That’s ok…But I’ll bet you, one day you’ll migrate to WP…
And you still choose blogger huh?
June 27th, 2008 at 11:49 am
I am sort of new to blogging and found the chart helpful. I wondered about the differences.
Thanks.

agree with lemon, blogger is an old habit. and i rather like how you can make the comment window pop out. what i dont like, is that when i decide to make it a private blog, i lose half my wordpress readers. hmph
June 28th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Are you comparing between WordPress.com and Blogger or WordPress.org and Blogger?
WordPress.org and Blogger is no competition. One is paid, one is free, there’s your difference.
Between WordPress.com and Blogger, it depends on the kind of blogger you are. I’ve used both and have found that Blogger is inconvenient. Yet, Blogger gives you a whole lot of customization options and WordPress.com charges money for all that. But WordPress.com manages to get you more hits from search engines, they have nice informal forums and brilliant stats management. That’s what makes them work even when they don’t allow Javascript and all. Differs from person to person, I guess.

Thanks for creating that chart! I’ve been doing research, too, and that chart is really useful.
June 29th, 2008 at 4:29 am
@Bonnie: I’m glad that it was useful for you…
and thanks for dropping b BTW…
@TKOTK: Hmmm.. you like that pop-out comment box. I seriously don’t like it…I like the comment box which is right after the post.
@Kristin: Your welcome. But that chart wasn’t created by me though. I have given the credits at the end of the post…

Wordpress all the way!!
For those saying you can’t edit CSS without paying money, Hello, free hosting anyone? You don’t even need a domain. Sites like x10hosting and 110mb provide free hosting, so that you can upload WP there, and you get a subdomain if you dont want to purchase a domain.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:40 am
I started out with Blogger and I liked them for the most part. Though I didn’t really like how their comment system took people to a different page.
I went over to Wordpress mostly because people just said it was better for search engines (that is, buying a domain and using Wordpress templates).
I’m no tech guru, but with the countless widgets, templates and great forum support, I prefer Wordpress.
(though I’ve started playing around with Squidoo now just for kicks)

Self hosted Wordpress blogs are great for making money. I have 4 wordpress blogs, which are my main sites, and a few niche blogger blogs, but Wordpress is the best if you ask me

Brilliant!
